In Denmark, Italian EU policy is little written about. The article seeks to illuminate some key reference points in Italian EU policy, seen in the perspective of Italian self-understanding and political history. One key discourse in Italian self-understanding is that of the illegitimate and ineffiscient state. This, along with the experiences from the World War II and a staunch europeanism dating back from before the Unification 1860-70 (il Risorgimento) has made Italy one of the most pro-EU countries. Today, no anti-EU political party exists in the Parliament, though the right-wing parties have a more sceptic attitude. To be anti-EU is to lose voters, as the Italian population is quite pro-EU. This contrasts the Danish situation to some degree.
